[ it's not but Joey doesn't like killing. Plus how funny would it be when Nancy finds out that he spares Jonathan but goes extra hard on her cuz she's a bully ]
I'll be honest man, it's Frank and Julie who you gotta watch out for. I don't care what the entity does to me, I do what I want.
[ False, he cares a lot and it HURTS. but toxic masculinity and the illusion of being a good guy are core to Joey while also striving to actually be a good guy. He's an enigma. ]
[ huh. yeah, he hasn't interacted with them as much, but that ... tracks. Joey stalks by in a rush of dark material, and Jonathan pops his head out, makes a psst at him. ]
[ Not going to lie, the psst startles him, had no idea that dude was right there. Jonathan might even catch a glimpse of Joey's shoulders tensing up. And then he turns his head slowly, like a horror movie killer over to him, just to scare him back.]
Why should I? It hurts, but that's the name of the game here. You get hurt in these too, don't you? But I'm sure you find time to relax or do other stuff too...
[ spooky. it's kind of ruined by the fact that Joey had jumped in the first place, which was funny. but that's okay. ]
I mean, one of our main biological imperatives is to avoid pain ...
[ but people sustain pain for other people all the time, although usually under extreme duress (like these trials). Joey doesn't have to, but he chooses to ... because he "does what he wants." there's more to it than that. now is probably not the best time to dig deep, but he'd already said he was going to (apparently) let them go. ]
Yeah but another is to eat food, and that's gone now. Don't we kind of just live in this weird state of suffering pain and then healing cyclically and constantly? Sometimes there's more pain, but I always come back, just a few scars. Maybe, the few of you who aren't dicks, maybe you guys deserve a little less pain? And maybe, I deserve more. Who's to say? I say...me. I get to. Cuz if there's one thing I still here, it's free will baby.

[ this is probably the most a killer has ever talked to Jonathan, and it's a little weird. who knew any of them could be so garrulous? he blinks, trying to get through the pure oddity of it. ]
You're really optimistic. Free will seems like an illusion here ... but maybe it was an illusion back home, too.
[ could this place be ... a grand metaphor for the world at large? no, never mind. he doesn't want to think about that right now. ]
What about your friends? Do they feel the same way?
Free will has always been an illusion, but it feels more real when you give into the illusion. I realized that recently, when I was smoking this massive spliff I made.
[ Too late, Joey and Johnny getting high and discussing life is already a forming idea in Joey's head. Maybe they should start a radio show. ]
Depends on which friend. Frank and Jules? I'm sure you can guess how they feel. Susie's a bit nicer though, if you don't get on her bad side. Much nicer if you get her high beforehand. You ever partake, Johnathan?

Shouldn't you? Doesn't it ... hurt?
